The preliminary date of the start of technical operation of the Peterhof’s fountains is 29 April 2017, a museum representative told the St. Petersburg Travel Guide. The date can be moved earlier or later due to weather reasons, of course. The day of an official opening is still unknown. Traditionally it is towards the end of May.
The Peterhof museum has two dates of fountains opening. In late April, the fountains are being put into test operation, and from this on you can enjoy yourself with them. The first big wave of visitors flows in the museum in the first half of May during long holidays.
We visited the Peterhof complex in that time and can say that an ordinary visit in May doesn’t differ from one in June, with the fact that the fountains are not officially opened making no any difference, though with fewer visitors.
Another date is the official opening ceremony, The Spring Fountains Festival, which is usually being celebrated with a big show and concerts. It’s worth visiting for itself let alone the attractions, of course.
Some tourist websites reported that the ceremony would be held on May 20, but this date was not confirmed by the museum. Traditionally, the opening of the fountains in Peterhof falls on the third Saturday in May; for example, in 2016, it was on May 21st. Perhaps, in 2017, it will really be on May 20, but it is still too early to put this day into your travel itinerary. Just follow our blog, we’ll tell you the date as soon as we’ve got it.
