Russian authorities have announced they will let the St. Petersburg stadium be filled by spectators up to half the capacity during four games of the Euros. The share can be increased if the coronavirus situation in the city makes it possible. And it looks like it will.
UPDATE: on April 23, UEFA transferred another three games to St. Petersburg, thus totally making it seven.
In March 2021, the Russian EURO 2020 committee director Alexei Sorokin said that the Russian governmental bodies permitted the games to be held «with the minimum of possible restrictions» and allowed a 50 percent capacity. All Russian matches will be held at the St. Petersburg stadium, also known as the Krestovsky stadium and Gazprom Arena — it’s official name under which it hosts games of the Russian Football Premier League. Its capacity is 68,000 spectators, thus half is 34,000 seats.
But this allowed share is not a final decision. In case, the coronavirus is not a great pain for the country in May, more spectators may be granted access to see the games.
At the moment, Russia has some restrictions to curb the spread of COVID 2019. But they don’t prevent mass events. All amateur and professional sports games, be it football, ice hockey, etc., are being held with the attendance of spectators occupying up to 75 percent of seats available. It’s happening throughout the country, with St. Petersburg following the same path.
Regarding transport, eateries, and entertainment, Russia is now living the pre-COVID life, and St. Petersburg is no exception. No lockdown has been enacted in Russia since the start of the pandemic a year ago, except for a rather short period in Moscow and a few other regions.
What it will be like in May and June, it’s now difficult to say. Authorities keep warning about the third wave of coronavirus coming, but experts point out it will be far weaker than the first and the second ones.
It’s still an open question whether foreign football fans will be allowed to Russia and the games. If yes, a Fan ID, a document issued for every ticket-holder to a game, will be enough to enter Russia, no visa will be required.
