The National committee +60, a St. Petersburg-based non-governmental organization, announced its initiative to name one of the city’s American bridges (on photo) in honor of the late David Rockefeller and thus boost Russian-American relationships that have been experiencing great deteriorating over recent years. Local toponymical authorities seem to be reluctant to the idea.
As the committee’s chairman Vladimir Belozerskikh told the media, he would like one of the five American bridges to be named after Mr Rockefeller. This railway bridge was built by an American technology in 1915, the year when the billionaire was born.
A letter with the initiative was sent to the city’s vice governor and members of the St. Petersburg toponymical commission, a body responsible for naming streets and other objects (final decisions are made by the city government).
«The move would help to restore Russian-American relations», said Belozerskikh. «Moreover, Mr. Rockefeller was fighting against fascism, so the initiative is also a tribute to his memory».
Alexey Erofeev, a member of the commission, said that the initiative cannot be realized as the American bridges already have their names — they are American bridges. Renaming is impossible.
The National committee +60 was founded in 2012 for celebration of 60th birthday of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Later, the organization became widely known for different weird initiatives, for example, they wanted to get Vladimir Putin canonized.
Well, we think that the idea still has chances for getting brought into life. St. Petersburg is known for its Trumpmania and the love for giving controversial names to bridges.
