The Biggest Planetarium In The World Opened In St. Petersburg

Planetarium One

With a dome with a diameter of 37 meters and a daily attendance capacity of 5.000 persons, the Planetarium No. 1 in St. Petersburg, opened on November 4, 2017, is really a planetarium №1 in the world by its size. It will feature a few programs dedicated to space and its exploration, an exhibition a lyceum and some other facilities and entertainments.

The 37-meter diameter dome is being served by 40 powerful projectors with a screen resolution of 100 million pixels. The venue can host up to 800 persons simultaneously.

Planetarium’s representatives say that a lot of multimedia content has been purchased and produced to be featured for different types of audience. Right now, one program is available, it features a 1.5 hour tale of space, the Big Bang, the creation of the Universe, the space equipment of astronauts and the history of space exploration. The cover for this news was taken from the program.

After watching and hearing the program, visitors can see an installation of space objects and rule stars with the help of sensible gadgets.
The sound is some like the Dolby Surround.

All guidance is in Russian only, but images of space and other multimedia content hardly needs to be translated.

The Planetarium is located not far from the historic center of St. Petersburg. It is hosted in a former building of the biggest gasholder in Russia, a store of natural gas used for lighting of St. Petersburg streets more than a century ago. The building had not been used for more than 100 years until private investors decided to turn it into a public facility.

A few facilities are to be added later. In January 2018, a laboratory will be installed, in May 2018 – an observatory.
