Another Major Outage on August 6
On the afternoon of August 6, residents of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region began reporting widespread internet connectivity problems. Websites and mobile apps failed to load, videos buffered slowly, and many users were unable to access banking services or online marketplaces.
The disruption was not limited to mobile data. Users also reported problems with home internet connections and a number of online platforms. Services affected included Ozon, Wildberries, Avito, Yandex services, Russian Railways (RZD), banking applications, and popular messaging apps.
According to outage monitoring services, thousands of reports were submitted from St. Petersburg over the previous 24 hours. The situation repeated itself in mid-June. On June 18, disruptions continued for a second consecutive day. Reports came from several parts of the city, affecting widely used websites and mobile applications. According to Downdetector, the number of complaints surged during certain hours.
Another wave of outages occurred on June 28, when users once again reported widespread mobile internet problems. In many cases, fixed broadband connections remained operational, suggesting that the disruption primarily affected mobile networks.
Similar incidents were reported several times throughout July. On July 6, many residents said that only services included on government-approved «whitelists» remained accessible. On July 26, users of several mobile carriers in the city center described comparable restrictions.
Another significant outage occurred on July 28. The number of complaints rose rapidly during the morning, and connectivity problems continued even after an air alert in a neighboring region had been lifted. Many users said their mobile internet service did not recover immediately.
Possible Link to Drone Threats
Several of the summer disruptions coincided with official drone threat warnings. During such periods, mobile internet service in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region often became unstable, operated under restricted access, or stopped working altogether.
A similar situation was observed during the night of August 3-4. Reports peaked overnight before declining by morning, although some users continued experiencing connectivity issues.
Russian authorities have previously stated that temporary mobile internet restrictions may be introduced for security reasons, including protecting critical infrastructure and reducing potential risks during emergency situations.
However, it is not possible to establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship between every outage and drone-related security measures. Not every disruption was accompanied by an official warning, and on August 6 both mobile and home internet services experienced problems simultaneously.
