Ice Sculpture Festival In The Peter And Paul Fortress Until February 9, 2020

Ice fest St Petersburg 2020

A fairy tale embodied in ice figures is the best feature of the Ice Fantasy festival, which is held annually in the Peter and Paul fortress. It turns into a place of pilgrimage for St Petersburg residents and tourists, especially during the New Year holidays. This season’s theme «Live Planet». Well, sounds timely, doesn’t it? A flashback to environmentalists’ efforts they have taken in 2019.

All figures of the Ice Fantasy festival are shown inside the fortress, near the Naryshkin Bastion, in a huge fridge tent, which maintains below-freezing temperature. So strong wind, temperatures above zero degrees or rain neither hurt the ice figures not disturb visitors.

Ice Sculpture Festival, St Petersburg

The theme «Live Planet» implies that you will see animals. Interestingly, the roster includes fantastic, never existing creatures. The gallery consists of (the list is not complete):

— cats;
— reindeer;
— cows;
— tarantula;
— mice;
— seamaid and her entourage;
— giraffes;
— elephant.

Preparing for Ice Sculpture Festival

The figures are not isolated from each other, they are part of a broader landscape. For example, African animals «live» in a savanna, while cows are where they tend to be, in a resting place for cattle in a European-style village.

Children (and adults too) can play an interesting game: find mousekins hidden in the exposition, count them and, if the number is correct, get a prize.

Here is a video from the festival on how the works and preparations look:
